The Paradox

1) Use the following words in a story or essay: ill-fitting, lilac, oily, raisin, and streak. (10 min)

Selle ducked under the oily gears and approached the visitor. "What are you doing in here?"

The visitor looked around with huge eyes at the machinery, then tugged at his ill-fitting jacket, wrinkling it and looking more like a raisin every second. He swallowed a few times.

"I said, what are you doing here?" Selle wiped his hands on an already filthy rag.

The visitor turned to face Selle, and puckered his mouth at what he saw. "There have been a string of mishaps and the boss wants this, er 'streak of bad luck' to change."

Selle stepped right up to the visitor. "And who are you?" He looked down on the visitor.

"Er," the visitor said, craning his neck to look up. He tugged at his lilac-coloured tie and adjusted the dark purple lapels. "Er," he repeated. "The boss just hired me."

"Did he." Selle rested his chin on his chest and looked down at the top of the human's head.

The visitor backed up a step, bumping into the door.

2) Write about being at a disadvantage..(10 min)

"Yes, he did. And I'm to be your supervisor."

Selle picked the visitor up and pushed the big door open.

"Hey! Put me down, you great oaf! What are you doing?"

"Going to talk to Boss."

Selle ambled across the courtyard, glancing back at his workshop. It would run fine without him, he assured himself. Even though he rarely left his post, he had everything set up to run fine without him. He slowed his amble to a human's walking pace as he got farther away.

"Put me down!"

Selle put the stranger with the odd clothing carefully on the ground, and waited while he brushed himself off. Now he looked even more like a raisin, with his face all puckered up and red.

The stranger started walking. "Come on then. You wanted to see your boss, didn't you?"

Selle followed, wondering why the human didn't turn toward Boss' office. He had put the human down right in front of it, so he could make a dignified entrance. Dignity was very important to these humans.

"You passed it," he said finally, when they were three buildings down the street and in front of the repair shop. "Are you lost?"

"This is my first day here," the stranger said. "I haven't had time to learn my way around."

3) Turn the disadvantage in the previous prompt into an advantage.(10 min)

Selle rocked back onto his heels and waited. The human would say something more. They always did.

"Well? Lead me there."

Selle stood up again and ambled back toward Boss' office. "Here," he said, stopping where he had put the stranger down.

The stranger gave him another raisin look and marched toward the door. "Coming?"

"I won't fit. Boss comes to my workshop to talk to me."

"That's another thing. It's not *your* workshop. You just work there."

Selle glanced nervously at his workshop, then was called back by a bang. The stranger had disappeared, and the office door was closed. Selle rocked back onto his heels again.

The humans bustling around the plant walked around him. He recognized the uniforms, but not many faces. Only a few humans came into his workshop.

The door in front of him opened, and Boss stepped onto the sidewalk.
