1) Use the following words in a story or essay: lightly, guilty, answer, moaning, midnight. (10 min)
"No. No no no." It wasn't an answer, Kelly knew, but saying it made her feel better. She closed her eyes.
She heard moaning, louder now as the sounds of people around her settled down. She kept her eyes closed, not wanting to meet the eyes of those still awake so long after midnight.
The walls of the shelter shook with the wind.
"No," she repeated in a whisper.
A hand touched her shoulder lightly. "The forecast said wind, not a hurricane."
Kelly shook her head without looking up. "It's not a hurricane. Winds aren't strong enough."
"Hey, it caught the weather guys by surprise too."
A handheld radio tapped Kelly's knee, and she looked up to see one of the clients.
"You're not guilty for not predicting this. I've been listening to the radio and all the news guys are talking about how it came out of nowhere."
2) Write about an unexpected pleasure. (10 min)
"You get radio here?"
"Not much, at night only, and it's full of static, but yes."
Kelly dug in her memory for the client's name, and gave him a strained smile. "Thanks, John. Let me know if anything new comes up on the news."
Something fell on the wall of the shelter, pulling the ceiling lower.
All flashlights still on shone on the bulge, and it moved, kicking a few times.
Kelly grabbed her light. "Nobody move."
A few pairs of eyes, those still awake, followed her as she crawled carefully over sleeping bodies and wriggled under the wall. Outside, the wind dug through her supposedly windproof jacket and made her shiver. She crawled around the corner of the shelter and peered carefully at whatever had fallen against it.
"Mark!"
She rushed toward him, skidding on her knees beside him.
"Hey there," he said. "Where's the door?"
3) Write about an expected displeasure. (10 min)
Kelly laughed with surprise. "Let's get you inside." Her first aid training had already kicked in and she knew he was on the edge of hypothermia. "Can you crawl? I'd rather lift the wall on the downwind side."
"No problem." Mark pushed himself up, and started shivering so hard he fell over again.
"Never mind." Kelly knelt on the edge of the tarp upwind of him, and started pushing on the rocks holding it down. "Get in here. I'll seal it up after you." She lifted the edge of the wall, and gave him a light shove.
He started crawling on his elbows, shivers racking his body. When he was in to his waist, his legs disappeared quickly as he was dragged the rest of the way inside.
Kelly pushed the rocks back onto the tarp to seal it up behind him, trying not to think about who was missing. Mark wouldn't have left anybody behind that he could help, so that meant the people missing when she'd counted heads couldn't be found. Or were beyond help. She crawled quickly downwind and wriggled under the wall again.
