The Paradox

1. Use the following words in a story or essay: different, entertained, body, driving, hallway. (10 min)

"Different people react to microgravity in different ways, but there are several..."

Hansi tuned the professor out and slouched down in her chair, ignoring her body's complaints about the hard edges. She tried to keep herself entertained but the professor's voice hadn't quite been trained into the perfect monotone, and sometimes a word or two picked up some colour and grabbed her ears.

She copied whatever flashed in front of her eyes but didn't listen, daydreaming about driving - no, driving wasn't the right word. They hadn't been taught the word yet. The priesthood was so protective of their field - she'd only just learned about microgravity last week, in this class. She sighed and glanced out the door, at the empty hallway.

2. Tell a tale of inappropriate or unusual clothing. (10 min)

It wasn't empty, though. Hansi schooled her eyes and pulled them back to the professor's notes. It wouldn't do for her to see that, she could give no sign that she had seen that. She snuck a second glance, casually shifting herself to sit sideways in her seat. Luckily she was next to the wall and could lean against it without drawing undue attention to herself.

The headmaster was still there, only a step farther along. It had taken her a few seconds to recognize him, out of his formal robes and without his stiff military bearing. He shuffled another tiny step forward, seeming very unsteady on his feet. A proctor appeared in the doorway and grabbed the headmaster's arm, making the bathrobe slap his legs. A second proctor appeared, and they turned the headmaster around, his slippers dragging.

Hansi quickly turned back to the front of the class so they didn't notice her.

3. Tell a story of a love/hate relationship, or an unrequited love at first sight. (10 min)

As she turned, Rennu caught her eye and smiled. He had been sitting almost directly between her and the door. Hansi cringed, and hoped he didn't think she had been looking at him.

The rest of the class dragged on, and it felt like four hours before they were finally dismissed. Hansi tried to avoid Rennu, but he was waiting for her just outside the door, in the now-crowded hallway.

"Well, hello," he said, falling in to step beside her.

"Hello," she said curtly, and started marching briskly to her next class.

"Didn't you want to say something to me? I noticed you looking at me in class."

Hansi's eyes flicked sideways and caught him looking directly at her, with a smile splitting his thin face. "I wasn't looking at you."

"You were daydreaming in class? Say it ain't so!"

Hansi marched on, her eyes straight ahead.

"You were even sitting sideways. The proctors don't like that."

She stopped, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. "What do you want?"
