The Paradox

1. borrowed, lights, whispered, think, without

The lights sparkled in the distance, shining without any sound. The silence was deafening to Shawn, and he fidgeted. The snow squeaked under his boots.

Heza whispered something, and Shawn pushed the hood of his borrowed parka back to hear better. "What?"

Heza gestured angrily for him to crouch down and be still. The frigid air on his exposed head was already making him shiver, and he put his hood back up as he sat on his heels. He was starting to think this might not be such a good idea.

2. write about someone feeling out of place

Shawn pulled his hands deeper into the sleeves of the parka and hugged himself. Heza had told him it would be cold, even provided the parka. That should have been a clue in itself. But he hadn't really understood it until they got out here.

Heza trotted forward, staying out of the direct line of sight of the lights. He wasn't wearing a parka. He wasn't, in Shawn's opinion, dressed for the weather at all, but he seemed quite comfortable. At least one of them seemed to belong. Shawn started shivering again, but remembered Heza's instruction to be still and didn't stand up.

3. Write about something that's unfinished

The planning session hadn't gotten much past this point, when Heza had heard something that had made him decide they had to start immediately. Shawn wasn't entirely sure how much help he'd be, since he only had an overview of their goal and no idea how exactly he fit into the plans.

He glanced over at Heza, and stood up abruptly when he didn't see any sign. The footprints were there, but that was all.
